Today, I’m a writer. But I didn’t start there.

Twenty years ago, I knew I was going to be a professional tuba player for a living. I won awards for my playing and went to the University of Michigan to study it and everything!

Ten years ago, I thought my destiny was to reshape local food systems for the better. I’d fallen in love with food while hauling flats of heirloom tomatoes and breaking down massive wheels of cheese while managing a community supported agriculture program on an urban farm. That path took me to the nonprofit world, where I helped run an all-local grocery store in a historic public market, made deals with farmers, and worked with chefs to get more sustainable, locally grown food onto plates.

Five years ago, I felt lost. After an unexpected layoff, I was scrambling to find my purpose and make ends meet. To pay the bills, I did a little bit of everything: chopping vegetables for a meal delivery service, selling pasture-raised meat at farmers’ markets, launching an artisan cheese subscription service, a little freelance writing. That turned into a restaurant reporter gig at a city magazine—and when I was approached to write my first book, I decided to go all in on my writing business full time.

Today, I’ve found that purpose. I’m a writer, telling stories about food, people, and nature that help readers feel and understand their world more fully. My work is educational and accessible while presenting the facts in a way that’s eye-catching and engaging, whether I’m profiling a chef-activist raising awareness about mass incarceration, analyzing how climate change is affecting grain supplies, digging into what makes Comté such an iconic cheese, or sharing tips about how to make your monstera lush and green.

But most of all, I love collaborating with clients and creative teams to solve problems and create something positive with my words. Whether you’re an editor at a publication or a business owner with a problem that some fresh ideas, smart strategy, and sparkling copy could solve, I hope you’ll reach out about working together.
